07/02/2006 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mark Teahen smacked a home run in the 11th inning to lead Kansas City to an 8-7 win over St. Louis in the middle contest of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.
Teahen knocked in four runs while David DeJesus went 4-for-6 with three runs scored for the Royals, who have won five of their last seven games. Luke Hudson (1-3) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief.
Sidney Ponson was hit around for six runs on seven hits in only 2 2/3 innings of work. Scott Spiezio and Scott Rolen each knocked in two runs for the Cardinals, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 contests.
Ambiorix Burgos took a 7-6 lead into the ninth for Kansas City, but promptly served up a home run ball to pinch hitter Jim Edmonds, tying the game at 7-7 and sending it into extra innings.
After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the 10th, the Royals took the lead in the 11th on Teahen's sixth homer of the year off of reliever Jason Isringhausen (2-4) who was saddled with the loss.
Rolen reached on a fielder's choice in the 11th, and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded when Hudson struck out both John Rodriguez and Hector Luna to end the game.
The Royals jumped on Ponson early, pushing four runs across in the first. After a leadoff single by DeJesus, Mark Grudzielanek doubled down the line in left to score DeJesus. Doug Mientkiewicz then worked a walk, and two batters later, Teahen lined a double to left, plating both Grudzielanek and Mientkiewicz for a 3-0 lead. Ponson issued walks to Angel Berroa and Paul Bako, before Teahen scored on an RBI groundout by Joey Gathright to cap the scoring in the inning.
DeJesus picked up his second single in as many innings to start the second. He moved to second on a groundout by Grudzielanek, and scored when Mientkiewicz grounded a single up the middle to up the Royals advantage to 5-0. DeJesus crossed the plate again in the third, after another Grudzielanek double, to push the lead to 6-0 and bring an end Ponson's night prematurely.
The Cardinals clawed back however, scoring two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Rolen's 11th homer of the year followed a single by Albert Pujols to bring St. Louis to within 6-2. Yadier Molina led off the fifth with his third homer of the year, and Spiezo's run-scoring single made it a 6-4 contest. Spiezio moved to second on a balk, and scored when the next batter, Pujols, lined a single to center.
St. Louis pulled even with Kansas City in the seventh when Spiezio smacked a two-out homer to right, his fourth of the season, off of reliever Joel Peralta.
DeJesus laced a one-out single to right in the eighth, and Grudzielanek followed by doubling to left. DeJesus, however, tried to score on the play, but was cut down on a strong relay throw by David Eckstein, keeping things knotted at 6-6. The Royals kept the inning going however, and with two outs, reliever Randy Flores walked Mientkiewicz and Reggie Sanders to load the bases. The next batter, Teahen, worked a walk to force home Grudzielanek with the go-ahead run.
Game Notes
The Royals have won 10 games in interleague play, the most they have ever won in a single season...St. Louis will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday when they send Jason Marquis to the mound. He will be opposed by Mike Wood for Kansas City.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
