Struggling Knicks shoot for another win over Wizards

02/26/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Knicks hope to put an end to their longest losing streak of this season when the badly-struggling club takes on the only team it has beaten in February, the Washington Wizards, this evening at the Verizon Center.

New York has dropped eight straight games and 11 of its past 12 contests, with the lone win in that span coming against the Wizards at Madison Square Garden on February 3. The Knicks have not lost nine in a row since March 19-April 4, 2006.

The latest setback occurred Tuesday in Boston, where New York came up on the short side of a 110-106 decision to the Atlantic Division-leading Celtics. The loss came on the heels of a forgettable 83-67 home defeat to Milwaukee the previous night.

The Knicks hung tough with Boston for most of the game and pulled within 107-106 on Tracy McGrady's layup with 2:45 to go, but the team missed its final five shots as the Celtics hung on.

David Lee amassed 28 points and 15 rebounds for New York in a losing cause, while Wilson Chandler ended with 19 points on the night. Sergio Rodriguez and Al Harrington each netted 18 points for the Knicks, who have now lost six straight road outings and fell to 7-18 as the visitor this season.

Eddie House, acquired from Boston last week in a trade that sent guard Nate Robinson to the Celtics, mustered only four points and went 0-for-5 from three-point range in more than 26 minutes of action against his former club.

"It's hard, just losing," House said afterward. "That's the hard thing, I'm not used to losing. I haven't been on a losing team in quite a long time."

Washington has made drastic changes since its 105-87 loss to the Knicks earlier this month. The Wizards made three trades prior to the recent deadline that sent out five players, including a trio of starters in forwards Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison and center Brendan Haywood, with such notables as swingman Josh Howard and forward Al Thornton coming over in return.

Veteran center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was also acquired from Cleveland in the Jamison deal, but the Wizards bought out the 7-foot-3 Lithuanian's contract on Thursday.

Washington has won three of five games since the re-tooling, although the team was handed a 99-94 loss by Memphis Wednesday at the Verizon Center. Andray Blatche, moved into a starting role in Haywood's absence, led the Wizards with 24 points and has averaged 24.8 points and 9.8 rebounds following the February 13 trade with Dallas that shipped both Butler and Haywood to the Mavericks.

Thornton racked up 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Wizards' first game since Howard suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee during Monday's 101-95 victory over Chicago.

"When you lose a player, everybody has to fill different roles," said Wizards head coach Flip Saunders of Howard's injury. "It puts different pressures on you."

These teams have split two previous meetings this season, with Washington downing the Knicks at the Verizon Center on January 30. New York has won five of its last seven overall matchups with Washington.
