Foye helps Wizards clip Nets

Basketball Betting Lines

02/28/2010 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Andray Blatche recorded a career night with 36 points, but it was Randy Foye's key jumpers in the final minute that lifted the Washington Wizards to an 89-85 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

The Nets were coming off Saturday's win at Boston and looking to win consecutive games for the first time all season. The game was tied with just under a minute left, but Foye made a baseline jumper with 44.6 seconds left before connecting again with 13.5 to go as the Wizards denied the Nets the opportunity.

Blatche connected on 17 of 31 shots, pulled down 15 rebounds and had four assists for the Wizards, while Foye finished with 16 points. Al Thornton added 20 points and eight boards in the victory, which snapped Washington's two-game slide.

Yi Jianlian had 20 points and a career-high 19 boards to pace the Nets, who were looking for their seventh win of the season. Devin Harris had 18 points, 14 assists and seven boards in the loss, while Brook Lopez added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Nets trailed by seven with just over five minutes to play, but used a nine-point run to move ahead. Terrence Williams fueled the rally with seven points, ending it on a dunk for an 81-79 edge.

JaVale McGee evened the game with a layup with 2:54 to go before each team missed a series of shots. Blatche then drained a mid-range jumper from the right side with 1:33 on the clock, and on the Nets' ensuing possession, Yi was fouled as he went up for a dunk. However, he made just 1-of-2 to keep the Nets down by one.

Yi made it back to the line with 58.8 seconds left and again only made one attempt, evening the score. But Foye delivered from the baseline on the Wizards' next touch, and after Harris missed a jumper, Foye drained another shot to make it a two-possession game. The Nets missed a number of shots at the other end, and Thornton sealed the win with a pair from the line.

New Jersey led by as many as 14 points, doing so in the first quarter before the Wizards got within 31-24 moving to the second. The Nets stretched their lead back out, taking a 46-32 advantage on a Yi jumper.

However, the Wizards closed the half on a 9-2 run to get within 50-44 at the break.

Washington drew even in the third, as buckets from Blatche and Mike Miller made it a 57-57 contest. It remained tight the rest of the frame, and the Wizards held a 69-68 edge going to the fourth.

Blatche's layup with 5:19 left in the game ended a six-point Washington burst for a 79-72 difference.

Game Notes

The Nets shot 35.2 percent, including a 3-of-14 performance from three-point range...Williams had 11 points for New Jersey...The Wizards shot 42.2 percent...Miller had nine points, eight boards and six assists for Washington.

Big East Conference odds

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence

Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.

Work left to do:

Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.

Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.

DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...

West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.

Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
